At the heart of Christ Central Ministries’ Downtown Hub—Hope Plaza—stands Sylvia Mickens, a leader whose journey reflects the true essence of service, humility, and unity. As Executive Director, Sylvia oversees several ministry programs that meet the needs of Orangeburg’s most vulnerable citizens, ensuring that compassion remains the foundation of every effort.

Her role spans across multiple outreach centers, including Concessions of Hope, where daily meals are provided to those in need, and the Resource and Solution Center, which connects individuals with critical services and collaborates with community partners to expand available resources. Whether she is coordinating volunteers, building partnerships, or serving on the front lines, Sylvia’s commitment is defined by one simple principle: wherever she is needed, that’s where she will be.

A Call to Serve Beyond Boundaries

Sylvia’s introduction to Christ Central was a moment of transformation. Coming from a traditional church background, she was moved by the sight of people from various denominations and organizations working together—setting aside differences to serve the poor and the homeless. It was a rare display of unity that reshaped her understanding of ministry and community.

What began as volunteer service soon became a lifelong calling. Through Christ Central, Sylvia learned that true ministry is not limited by denominational lines but is fueled by love and compassion. This environment of collaboration continues to inspire her and those around her to view service not as charity, but as an expression of shared humanity.

Learning Through Service

Sylvia often describes Christ Central as her classroom—a place where she has learned the deepest lessons about faith, humility, and the value of every person. She has come to believe that serving the poor is one of the greatest opportunities to grow in understanding and grace.

Through the years, she has seen how acts of service not only meet material needs but also change hearts—both of those being served and those doing the serving. Her leadership encourages others to recognize that “the poor are just like us,” reminding the community that everyone has something to give and something to learn.

A Legacy of Faith and Dedication

For more than thirty years, Sylvia’s work with Christ Central has been both her ministry and her mission. She considers it a divine trust—an honor to serve those whom God calls His most vulnerable. Despite her own challenges, she remains steadfast, believing that every day of service is an opportunity to grow in wisdom and compassion.

Today, Christ Central Ministries is not just her workplace—it is her family and her home. Under Sylvia’s guidance, Hope Plaza continues to embody the spirit of its name—a place where hope is restored, lives are renewed, and love is made visible through action.
